Anthrax Spores Found in Princeton Mailbox
NEWARK, NJ: August 12, 2002 — Anthrax spores were found inside a Princeton mailbox tested after workers at a regional mail sorting facility contracted the bacteria in October, Gov. James E. McGreevey said.
The mailbox was removed last week and there is no danger to the public, McGreevey said Monday. He spoke at a press conference with the state attorney general, David Samson, and Louie Allen, special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark office.

"No new cases have been detected beyond the original cases in October 2001," McGreevey said. "With the subsequent removal of the mailbox, no further threat exists."

McGreevey said he did not know when the tests were done. Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office, declined to say.

The mailbox is a standard blue public drop-box that was located on Nassau Street near Princeton University.

Its mail was fed through the sorting facility in Hamilton Township, and was among 600 chosen to be swabbed for anthrax spores by the U.S. attorney's office in Newark, McGreevey said. He did not know how or why the mailboxes were chosen.

Thirty-nine of the 600 mailboxes have yet to be tested.

U.S. Attorney Chris Christie issued a statement confirming the governor's announcement. He said the matter was under investigation.

Drewniak declined to say what effect the positive test might have on the investigation.

Dr. Clifton Lacy, commissioner of the state Department of Health and Senior Services, said the test results came back positive Thursday at the department's Public Health and Environmental Laboratory.

"It was not a field test," he said. "It was a sample done in the laboratory."

Lacy said a department survey of 240,000 emergency room visits and 7,100 stays in intensive care units in and around the state following the October infections turned up no new anthrax cases.

Hamilton handles mail for 46 area post offices and has been closed since Oct. 18. The office processed anthrax-tainted letters sent to NBC anchor Tom Brokaw, U.S. Sens. Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy and the New York Post.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. postal inspectors investigating the anthrax mailings linked to five deaths have discovered a mailbox that tested positive for traces of the bacteria, a postal official said on Monday.

The mailbox was found on Thursday night in Princeton, New Jersey, and has been sent to a U.S. Army facility in Aberdeen, Maryland, for forensic analysis, U.S. Postal Service spokesman Dan Mihalko told Reuters.

He said the mailbox was discovered as investigators checked hundreds of boxes from which mail is funneled to a postal sorting center in Trenton, New Jersey, where four anthrax-laced letters were postmarked last year.

"We've been looking at all the mailboxes that feed into the Trenton facility," Mihalko said. "One of them did test positive."

The mailbox was sent to the army laboratory for more conclusive tests, he said, adding, "We've seen in the past, field tests that turn up false positives."

Five people died and 13 were sickened last year as anthrax-tainted letters were sent to government officials and media outlets in Washington, Florida and New York. The letters were mailed in the weeks following the Sept. 11 attacks.

The FBI launched an investigation in October to find the person responsible for the anthrax attacks. Authorities are offering a $2.5 million reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

It is unclear from the article if this is a private home mailbox or a larger PO mailbox.....very strange that it would take so long to find it. Could this be a more recent contamination?

I'd like to know why it took them 11 months to find this mailbox, and for personal reasons. At the time, my daughter lived in Princeton and also has rheumatoid arthritis. Because of the many drugs she's on, her immune system is compromised. This could have, quite literally, killed her.

I suspect that they either just got around to testing this mailbox--I won't want to begin to count the number of mailboxes they would have had to check if the were thorough--or are just getting the results back.

I also presume that this refers to a pick-up box rather than an individuals home mailbox.

I wonder how long these mailboxes have been in quarantine? It doesn't sound like a diligent investigation, unless I'm missing something here.

You're right. Nassau St. is the main drag in Princeton. I find it hard to believe the public mailboxes on this street were not tested after the news last year. Maybe it's just that we're only being told about this discovery now.

How well I know! I was a Princeton undergraduate 1964-8, and worked at the Institute for Advanced Study 1982-91. I have been on that part of Nassau St. countless times.

The article says the found the mailbox on Thursday night. I can only hope it's a false positive. I do know that when anthrax hit the Trenton Post Office, my daughter's RA doc told her not to even touch the mail, no contact whatsoever. For months, her long-suffering fiance stood outside her window, holding up each piece of mail for her to see. If it was a bill, she wrote a check, gave it to him later and he mailed it for her. I'll allow myself some borderline hysteria, but I do know her RA doc was so so right.

I have been on that part of Nassau St. countless times.
So has my daughter. She lived in Princeton for about 15 years, but she's move out of the "big city" into the countryside where the overly-fecund deer are in their natural habitat and not in her backyard.

Everytime we'd visit her, we'd go down to Nassau street and windowshop. It's so much fun.

I did check the local papers and none have the story yet, and neither did the Trenton Times. They'll have more coverage tomorrow.

What is even more incredible is that this info surfaces the day after that Dr. Hatfill fellow had the press conference in front of his civil attorney's office. I wonder if the Feds are suddenly trying very hard to avoid a 'Jewel' of a case.

Why gosh, yes it does....everyone knows that it's IMPOSSIBLE to drive 3 hours from Frederick MD to Princeton NJ, and 3 hours back, to mail anthrax letters. I've never heard of anyone driving that far in my life.


Seriously, Trenton/Princeton NJ is the precise distance of a 6-7 hour day trip from Frederick, MD, if you wanted to drive far enough away from your house to make a mail attack and not attract suspicion to yourself, but still have you gone for a brief enough period of time that it's not noticed.


If I were mailing anthrax letters, I'd drive about 3-4 hours away, mail them, and drive back.

You would drive 4 hours away, but still be dumb enough to mail them from a commercial/university main street with dozens of shops that might have surveillance cameras and where parking is tough to find? I've been there many times, and it would not be my first choice for a place not to be noticed.
Any Moslem profs or grad students within walking distance? Or is Hatfill such an Evil Genius he drove to Princeton to frame someone?

Why, if it was Hatfill, would he drive to downtown Princeton, a few miles from the New Jersey Turnpike? Why, if he did that, would he put on the envelope as a return address Franklin Park together with the Zip Code for the adjoining Monmouth Junction (which just happens to be where the main mosque in the area is)? That sounds like the sort of a mistake a local would make, not someone researching for a return address in books or on the Internet.

Why are Muslim terrorists sending anthrax letters to two left wing Congressmen, and absolutely no one else in the Congress or Executive branch, including any number of people who played key roles in the Gulf War, policy towards Israel, etc.?

Why are Muslim terrorists who go out of their way to kill as many people as they physically can on 9/11 going out of their way to kill as FEW people as possible with the quantity of quality anthrax they had (letters instead of dispersal in a crowded place, letters TELLING people it was anthrax and recommending antibiotics?

Why should Moslem terrorists attack in a way that minimizes casualties? I think the Great Satan has offered a plausible explanation for that: the letters were a warning and a threat, not an actual attack.

There is a loose Princeton connection with the 9/11 hijackers. Ziad al-Jarrah, a college roommate of Atta's from Hamburg, was the leader of the Flight 93 hijackers. Al--Jarrah is the one who took al-Haznawi to the emergency room on 6/22 with an (apparent) cutaneous anthrax infection. He arrived in Newark from Florida on 9/7 and is not known to have stayed in any hotel until the night of 9/10, when he checked into the airport Marriott. In between, after midnight on 9/9, he received a speeding ticket doing 90mph on the New Jersey Turnpike, which is of course the highway between Newark and Princeton. There is no known reason for him to have left Newark, and even less reason for him to have done so in an attention-grabbing hurry.
If one wished, one could suppose that Jarrah delivered the letters to someone in Princeton on 9/9, who held onto them for exactly one month and mailed them on 10/9.

I suspect we have a pretty good idea who did it, but don't want to complete the case until we are ready to spring the trap. If suspicians that this is coming from a foreign state are correct, than that is a pretty big trap to build and will take time.

Okay, amend that a bit. I checked with an epidemiology study done by UCLA and got the "definitive" (i.e., best guess) list of letters. There were five letters mailed 9/18, exactly one week after 9/11. All five were sent to the media: American Media, the NY Post, NBC, ABC and CBS. The Daschle and Leahy letters, which contained superior anthrax and a different message, were mailed 10/9.

The aforementioned study, by the way, is very much worth reading. It also contains a link to another excellent site, anthraxinvestigation.com. That site's author is altogether too quick to pooh-pooh the al-Qaeda and Iraq links, but aside from that he's written a lot of thought-provoking material.

AMI workers and Bob Steven's physicians concur that his exposure was probably from a suspicious package containing an obscene letter and a tobacco tin holding a Star of David buried in powder. The letter was received about one week before 9/11, but was deemed suspicious and Stevens did not examine it until the 19th. Had the letter been opened on arrival, the anthrax cases at AMI would have started on or shortly after 9/11. The timing, combined with the lack of warning or self-identification and the fact that the anthrax aerosolized readily, unlike that in subsequent media letters, suggests this incident may have been intended as a lethality demonstration or "calling card" rather than a warning.
The editor of The Sun, Michael Irish, is a private pilot who flies out of the Lantana airfield where Mohammed Atta practiced for the WTC attacks. His wife, Gloria Irish, is a realtor who found apartments near AMI for several of the hijackers, and had numerous contacts with them in the run-up to their destruction of the World Trade Center.

The FBI chooses not to discuss or explore the AMI incident on the AMERITHRAX web-site. AMI officials believe the FBI has not been frank with AMI's employees about the nature of the attack, and discounts the domestic loner premise which is, for public consumption at least, the focus of the AMERITHRAX investigation.

Just as DC is often forgotten in the 9/11 attacks, Florida is forgotten in the anthrax attacks. Coincidince just won't cut it and that strike appeared to have happened prior to 9/11.

There had to have been a non-trivial amount of powder outside the tin, too—the CDC followed a trail of contaminated post offices from AMI back to the West Palm Beach main branch. But what they didn't find was any contamination in the chain between West Palm Beach and New Jersey, so you're right, that the AMI letter passed through Trenton is pure speculation on their part.

A very interesting point in support of my argument, which I had not thought of or read about. Thanks.

Again, the timing of that "JLo" letter is very interesting. If everything had gone as planned, things would have been far worse than they were, as if that can be imagined. My guess is we were supposed to wake up on 9-11 to witness first the destruction of the WTC, then to see the White House and the Capitol reduced to smoldering rubble shortly aftwerwards and then, while we were still reeling from that, we would have got the news that people were dropping like flies from inhalation anthrax at a company called American Media, right by the main hijacker nest, and that the source of the illness was a tin containing a Star of David buried in a pile of dust.

And, once the dust had settled and the "unimportant people" at the tabloid had been made an example of, the more explicit threats would have rolled in:

The powder in that tin was mainly and perhaps entirely soap powder. If the anthrax came in that letter, it might have been mixed in with the soap powder, or it may have been elsewhere in the package.

This the kind of detail work that was once done very well by many people who learned how to graph sentence syntax, how to write beautifully readable cursive script, how to keep double entry accounting books by hand, knew the names of all the Presidents and the major battles of evry war back to Hastings, didn't have a magical withholding tax deducted each week from their pay, which was neatly piled in small manilla envelopes in hard-metal backed certificates and coin, and didn't expect the government to pay for their every damn expense and their children's every whimsy forevermore.

NEWARK, NJ: August 12, 2002 — Anthrax spores were found inside a Princeton mailbox tested after workers at a regional mail sorting facility contracted the bacteria in October, Gov. James E. McGreevey said.
The mailbox was removed last week and there is no danger to the public, McGreevey said Monday. He spoke at a press conference with the state attorney general, David Samson, and Louie Allen, special agent in charge of the FBI's Newark office.

splain me this: if the contaminated mailbox was tested positive for anthrax resulting in postal workers contracting the bacteria in Oct '01...and was "removed last week"...why hasn't other the other mail posted through it over the past 9 months resulted in additional cases of anthrax?

Think if we go back, this is an old story and someone is trying to put it forth as new information.
I believe there was another mailbox in DC that also tested positive.

Don't forget, the old swab tests are considered garbage.

If I were going to put Anthrax in the mail and wanted to make sure it got there, I'd put in a the box near the post office just before pick up time and watch it get "into the system".

In investigating, I'd look for a pattern..e.g. Tuesday seems to be a favorite day...Who has off on Tuesday??? and can run around doing errands???

Everything was happening on Tuesdays...

Check out Mr. Pervez in the article above. There is mention of the two 'cleared' (but still held I believe) body-shaven Islamic Indian nationals, 'hijacking suspects,' who were caught on the train to San Antonio with large sums of cash, false passports, hair dye and box cutters after disembarking from a plane which landed prematurely in St. Louis on 911. The two had told conflicting stories about staying in San Antonio- a doctor. They had at one time lived in a NJ apartment in which Pervez had also lived, an apartment which was searched by the US before the anthrax cases showed up and later by WSJ reporters who found articles on Sarin gas, biowarfare, etc. All three had worked together at a news stand, so such articles wouldn't be odd for them, but the apartment according to some witnesses was very busy before the attacks of 9/11 with many middle eastern men dropping in. (Wonder how many national enquirers the trio sold?) Anyway, the man named Pervez is a pretty curious person with ties to the Princeton area. It was his name which was on the apartment mailbox.

As far as I can tell, there is no evidence linking Hatfill to the anthrax mailings, not even circumstantial evidence. The article on this novel is yet more unfounded innuendo -- the plot of the novel sounds nothing like the actual anthrax mailings. There's nothing there I'd even term a coincidence.

The last I heard, the two people arrested in San Antonio were still being held, on charges of credit card fraud. No ties to terrorism were said to have been discovered.

I didn't want to post this & please don't post this either, but my daughter said she saw a police stakeout at the Skillman Post office in the past week or so. (She recognized one of the cops at the stakeout but the others were unknown to her.) They sat in & around the van for a few hours (they were there when she arrived & were still there when she left). She suggested that it'd be less obvious if the cops moved their arms from time to time to pretend they were working.

She didn't know if this was related to anthrax, but with the focus back on Princeton, she thought it might be. She said she got a weird feeling after seeing the stakeout & now anthrax being found in a PO box in Princeton. It may be because the anniversary of 9/11 is coming up, but who knows.


I just didn't want to give ANY tipoff to any possible suspect if I talked about a stakeout at a post office & where it was on FR.

Some thoughts why, for the moment, I feel stronger the guy is from that area:
To use that off-the-beaten-path city and nearby zipcode would take some extra research by someone from not in the area. For example, if it was Hatfill, why wouldn't he use an easier name, like Trenton or Princeton.

Assume that the mailboxes with anthrax are in Princeton area alone. Seemingly the letters were mailed from there. If a non-local mailed them from there, wouldn't he be more likely to make up a Princeton address?

I think it more likely that someone working or travelling to Princeton mailed them, with a familiarity with the Franklin Park area - maybe a near by commuter or something. There's a lot of biotech in both areas - with people presumably trained to handle germs.

The mailboxes themselves could be cross-contaminated - I haven't seen it mentioned, but maybe those plastic boxes carted around by the Post Office personnel, and put into mail boxes? But if so, would expect a variety of mail boxes contaminated? No info on that.

Just seems unusual to me, that someone from out of the area would use "Franklin Park" and not mail them from there. To me, seems like a local using local info, twisting it up a little for disguise.

I've been thinking about it. Note "fits FBI profile". Fair enough. So how does she get these other bits of "profile?" For the most part, she is profiling, she's picking out what she knows or suspects about Hatfill, and posing it as deductive reasoning.

Tests have confirmed that traces of anthrax were found in a mailbox in Princeton, N.J., and federal authorities were investigating the possibility that last year’s deadly anthrax-laced letters were mailed from there, NBC News has learned


THE MAILBOX, a standard blue receiving bin on a street corner across from Princeton University, returned a positive reading for traces of anthrax in a swab test last week. The mailbox, the only one of more than 550 such boxes examined in the region to return a positive reading, was removed for more sensitive testing this week.
The new tests confirmed the initial field reading, investigators told NBC News on Wednesday.
Still to be determined, however, is whether the anthrax in the mailbox is the same strain that killed five people after envelopes filled with the deadly bacteria were sent last autumn to a Florida tabloid newspaper, NBC News, the New York Post and the U.S. Senate.
State health officials said it was also possible that the box was cross-contaminated by mail containers that came in contact with the anthrax-laced letters elsewhere.
But investigators told NBC’s Pete Williams that they believe that the letters, which bore New Jersey postmarks, may have been mailed from the Princeton mailbox. They said sensitive tests found traces of the bacteria in the upper part of the box, making it unlikely that mail containers, which are placed in the bottom to catch mail, could have caused the contamination.




SCIENTIST UNDER SCRUTINY
NBC News first reported Tuesday morning that FBI agents were circulating photographs of former federal scientist Steven J. Hatfill in the area of the mailbox. Workers in nearby businesses told NBC’s Robert Windrem that the agents were asking them to identify only one photograph, which matched a photograph of Hatfill shown to them by NBC News.
Some of the workers acknowledged, however, that they might have recognized Hatfill from television coverage of the FBI investigation. Hatfill read a statement denouncing the probe that was widely broadcast over the weekend.
“I’m sure I did see it, that face,” said Shalom Levin, who owns a nearby restaurant. “Then they asked me, ‘Is it possible you saw it on TV?’ And I said, ‘Yeah, that’s possible.’”
Leticia Fraga, who works for a law firm, told NBC News: “Yes, he looked familiar, but only because I had seen his picture on the news.”
Hatfill, 48, has vigorously denied having any involvement in the anthrax mailings, and federal authorities have said he was only a “person of interest” in the investigation, not a suspect.

The company dismissed Hatfill in March. He has since then been placed on administrative leave with pay from Louisiana State University’s National Center for Biomedical Research and Training, which he joined after his dismissal from Science Applications.

Hatfill complained that he lost his job with Science Applications because of a constant barrage of media calls, which he said had ruined his career. But U.S. officials indicated Tuesday that Hatfill actually was fired because he failed the CIA polygraph in August 2001.
One of the officials told NBC News that the polygraph was administered because Hatfill needed to upgrade his security clearance to work on a CIA counterterrorism contract awarded to Science Applications.
Once Hatfill had failed the polygraph, another U.S. official said, the CIA informed the Defense Security Service, which regulates security clearances. As a result, Hatfill was stripped of all of his security clearances. Science Applications gave Hatfill six months to regain his security clearance; when he failed to do so, he was dismissed.
The U.S. official would not say what questions Hatfill was believed to have answered less than truthfully, nor would he say what projects Hatfill would have been working on had he obtained the necessary clearance.
However, referring to a report in Tuesday’s editions of the New York Post, which said Hatfill stumbled on questions related to his purported service with a white Rhodesian commando unit, the official said, “That story is largely accurate.”

Post box ... spores found at top... the stuff's supposed to float in the air, no? But if this indicates letters mailed from this box, this takes away my plastic box supposition. My guess is that a suspect could be a person whom is familiar with the "Franklin Park" area, and commutes to the Princeton area. Compare: would a person from Atlanta who wanted a falsely return-addressed letter to appear as if it came from Jacksonville mail it in Daytona Beach?

Lie Detector - so he failed one in August, presumably due to resume inflation or wanting to hide his past intelligence background, or associate his military career with some higher rank or elite group (how many fake "Navy Seals" are out there - plenty). My question is, did he fail his polygraph AFTER the attacks? It's like finding Clinton lied about Monica, therefore, he's guilty of sending the letters. (On second thought....nah!) Isn't the important question did he fail the anthrax polygraph?

He was "actually fired" because he failed the August test? B.S. Why was he hired in the first place? He was fired because of the reporters. This smear is after the fact stuff...trying to prevent a lawsuit, probably.

The institute is the "primary custodian." What's that? And so what? Did he steal a ton of it? Amounts are in many places, and probably more, due to corruption and espionage. And did he have access to the area with the specific germ?

Really a desperate smear.

Are we being duped??
We are being told that this mailbox was just tested ....NOW???

I would think that when they were testing the copy machines at Princeton, they would be testing the mailboxes also. The FBI isn't THAT dumb.

So,here we are, 4 or 5 months after the copiers were tested with a box close by with Anthrax on it's surface.

What's really going on.

These pieces don't fit.

P.S. If I were going to put Anthrax in the mail, I would drive to the box I wanted to use, put it in the pickup box shortly before the pickup time and wait and watch that the mail was picked up and the Anthrax got into the system. I'd guess two people in a car, one with a camera since these Terrorists just love to Document their acts.

We know the movements of Atta and his friends by their vehicles and I'd sure like to "match dates" on their moves up the coast just preceeding 9-11. Where did they stop??Who did they "pass" the Anthrax to??

Anthrax spores knocked loose from a contaminated "flat tray" placed in the bottom of the box - seems my education of you folks about how the post office really operates is paying off.
This is the same way that NJ letter carrier caught cutaneous anthrax - from a tray!

Postal management elected to not destroy contaminated trays. This problem will continue to pop up for years. It is not possible now to destroy the contaminated trays without destroying them all.

Just some followup. The local college paper alwasy says the mailbox is "across the street from Holder Hall." According to the map available at Princeton.edu, Holder Hall is a dorm, among others occupying the NE corner of the campus.

It is not possible now to destroy the contaminated trays without destroying them all.
I would hazard the guess that it would be a lot cheaper to destroy all the trays than to face liability for another case of anthrax.

You'd need a couple of expert witnesses who were able to refute every postal argument. Otherwise, any lawyer bringing a suit against USPS for anthrax related injuries would be in the same boat as the FBI.
BTW, there are such expert witnesses, and some of them are getting angry with the criminal stupidity of the FBI in this case.

A very recent e-mail from my daughter says that one of the mail carriers said (I'll have to e-mail her for her source) that the mailbox in question has been used by mail carriers to "park" other pick-up boxes (those white plastic bins) in the mailbox in question while the mail carriers do their routes. There could've been cross-contamination, but as far as I know, there are still over 30 mailboxes left to test, and, as far as we know, this is still the only mailbox to test positive for anthrax.
I don't know if they mean the mailboxes left to test are in the Princeton area, or those are mailboxes that feed into the Hamilton Township sorting facility, a much wider area than Princeton Borough and Township.

Shermy, because of my daughter's health problems (rheumatoid arthritis), I wish she wasn't the inside source. She's got a compromised immune system & anthrax would kill her--her body just doesn't have the resources to fight back. However, she has promised that she will not stick her head into any mailboxes in downtown Princeton and inhale deeply. She also thinks I'm overreacting. NAAAAW.
